On layoffs and how to deal with them

Crossposted from LinkedIn.

My LinkedIn feed is filled with connections and near-connections who have been laid off. Many are from my former employer #Microsoft. It was a dream job for me, and it pained me to leave (the travel was hurting my family too much). But change is important. It motivates us, and pushes us. To focus. To do better.

AND MOST IMPORTANT… To identify what is really important.

I am not the man I was. Am I better? DON’T KNOW. But I know I’ve become a lot more caring, and a lot more focused, on what I want to do.

The only currency we have in the end is TIME. For all the folks dealing with this trying time (and in the end, what times AREN’T trying?) use some of your precious time to be reflective. What do you REALLY want to do?

Maybe it’s something you are scared to even try.

Layoffs produce a LOT of small businesses. Some fail. MOST fail. And maybe that is not for you. But maybe it is.

Maybe you want to go into an industry you are excited about. That enthusiasm is fuel. Use it.

WE ARE WHO WE CHOOSE TO BE.

And that’s kinda scary.

GOOD.

Because that’s a sign that you’re aware. The map says: You are HERE. And the future is what you make it.

Make it the best one you can.

Godspeed.
