John Dykstra: “The Wizard of Hollywood’s Dream Factory”

I just picked up the Marvel Super Special adaptation of the original 1978 Battlestar Galactica – it was in a special “tabloid size” (which really showcased the gorgeous art of Ernie Colon) as well as magazine-sized. The super special was the magazine version ,which allowed me to scan the article/interview with John Dykstra.

After making the special effects for a little movie you may have heard called Star Wars, Dykstra was hired to do the special effects for the Galactica pilot. He did a fantastic job, and the article is an amazing snapshot around how things were done back then. When we think of modern visual effects, it is amazing to think that the computer controlled camera was so revolutionary… the idea of a “traveling matte” was groundbreaking.
