If the next president of the United States was a professional UX designer, how would he change the country?

The following is a portion of an inauguration address I think a UX professional would deliver if he/she was elected president:

My fellow Americans, I thank you for your trust in me and electing me to this great office. As President I promise to follow through on my campaign promises to make government better, more effective and usable for both government workers and their customers: the American people. We will focus on providing the best most efficient service that we can to the public.

To do that there are three parts to my plan: First, we will do a top-down audit of all government processes and policies. To that end I will be hiring consultants from not only the user experience discipline, but also decision makers from our nations businesses. And not just corporations – we will bring in small business owners and entrepeneurs. They will review our processes, and also tell us what they expect and need from the government.

Second, we will interview government employees across the nation to identify opportunities to improve things. Who knows better the trappings and failing of democracy than the people who have to fight that bureaucracy every day?

Third, we will streamline processes based on what we have learned – we expect there to be some tough decisions and there will be challenges – but we also expect that making things better requires effort. A new customer-centered government will be simpler, cheaper and better for our nation. As part of this we will also provide each government agency a clear mission statement and a purpose. If an existing agency doesn’t have a clear purpose that adds value to it’s customers, it may be reduced or eliminated.

Again, we work for you – let’s get the process started of providing better services and experiences to you, the American people.
