Quick review: Supanova pop culture event in Sydney

Just got back from day one of the Supanova pop culture convention here in Sydney, and here’s some quick thoughts:

The venue (the Dome at the Sydney Olympic park) was WAY too small for the number of people who came, and if you showed up around the time the doors opened, you were gonna cool your heels for a while – they were trickling people in an many waited for hours to get inside. Thankfully I was very early and got inside less than a half-hour after the event began.

The cosplayers were AWESOME. Lots of manga and amine characters, some great Doctors and Ghostbusters, and a multitude of beautiful women in skintight clothing. In that last point I have no complaints.

The vendors were great, with a nice wide selection of cool geekery to sell. Some great deals to be had, too.

The autograph lines were insanely long… The big guests Eliza Dushku and Summer Glau were surrounded throughout the day and the teeny-tiny areas they did their panels in prevented me from attending.

All in all, I’m glad I went but the size of the venue was a huge issue. The idea that you can do an event of this scale in a building the size of a football field is just ridiculous. It’s like trying to squeeze toothpaste back into the tube.
