U.N.C.L.E. a day, day 14: “The King of Knaves Affair”

U.N.C.L.E. a day is my obsessive-compulsive approach at working through The Complete Man for U.N.C.L.E., now available on DVD. One episode, one review a day (usually – occasional hiatuses may occur due to travel).

A funny moment happens early in this episode, when Napoleon enters the Del Floria’s tailor shop (which, as all of you should know, is the secret entrance to U.N.C.L.E.’s New York headquarters), goes through the secret passage in the fitting room, flirts with the secretary, and goes to Mr. Waverly’s office. In a meeting with Illya he decides they need to go to Rome to investigate why a uranium scientist was murdered. Two quick cuts (and some stock footage later) and Napoleon is entering U.N.C.L.E., Rome… through a secret entrance accessed through a tailor shop. The scenes – and the dialogue – are almost exactly the same as what we saw in New York, only with different actors… and in Italian.

That, unfortunately, is the highlight of this episode, a rather weak one (with a large chunk of it being taken up with Solo imprisoned by a crazy “King”), but compared to the third-season dreck still to come… it’s wonderful.

Also, unfortunately, it is not a full Solo/Kuryakin team-up episode, with the duo working together only in the first half of the episode (but it is the first team-up since “Project Strigas”). This will change…

We’re now two+ weeks into U.N.C.L.E., and we’re not even half-way through the first season. Lots more spy action to come…
