Watchmen: The movie… what could have been…

I’m a huge fan of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ Watchmen graphic novel. It is, basically, the reason I no longer read comics on a regular basis. When you read Watchmen, a work that tweaks the conventions of the genre on it’s head, well, the soap opera stories involving mutants and cosmic-ray-infused families just don’t have the same effect anymore.

Well, the director of 300 (another great graphic novel) is making a film from Watchmen, and will be very closely adapting this seminal work from what I have read so far. It’s one of the few movies coming out the next year I am excited about.

In case you did not know, it was almost produced once before…

Here is a copy of a shooting script from the 90s that Sam Hamm, the co-writer of 1989’s Batman, put together. It’s… interesting, especially in the choices it makes on changing the original’s ending… But FAIR WARNING, if you have not read the graphic novel, DO NOT read this first. Run, don’t walk to pick up a copy and then, once completed, click the link and read the script if you are curious.
