Roy Scheider, R.I.P.

Wow.

I just rewatched Jaws on Friday (and wrote about that here) and I wake up bright and early on Monday morning to the news that Roy Scheider has passed at the age of 75.

Scheider is one of those actors who has been in so many movies (most good, some not so much) you expect he’ll be around forever. You’d catch a segment of a made-for-TV movie and there he’d be, not the flashiest actor nor the best but he’d be there.  Now, he’s gone. And if he had just done Jaws that would be enough…But look at the list of just some of his films…

Klute (1971)

The French Connection (1971)Marathon Man (1976)

Sorcerer (1977)

All That Jazz (1979)

Blue Thunder (1983)

52 Pick-Up (1986)

The Russia House (1990)

Naked Lunch (1991)

Romeo Is Bleeding (1993)

The Rainmaker (1997)

I’m a BIG fan of his work in All that Jazz, and while he was not the star, his work in The French Connection is top notch. Same with The Russia House. Same with… well, almost everything he did was great work.

After receiving some personal bad news on Friday, I went for a walk, and just as I started I hit shuffle on the ipod. The first song up? George Harrison’s “All Things Must Pass.”

Indeed they do.
