VIDEO: The Star Trek Smithsonian Exhibit from 1992
In 1992 the Air and Space Museum in Washington DC featured a massive exhibit celebrating Star Trek – it showcased props, costumes and models from the show. I was able to travel to DC to check out the exhibit that year and was totally knocked out by it (though I still don’t like the details/hull lines they painted onto the big Enterprise model).
Through the magic of the Internet, I was able to find video someone took of the exhibit that they uploaded to YouTube. Here’s all 8 parts, set up in a playlist:

VIDEO: Vintage Kenner Star Wars toy commercials
I’m being especially nostalgic today, and stumbled upon this compilation of classic commercials for Kenner’s Star Wars toys. Ah, memories. I had a lot of the toys featured in these ads, but lost most of them when my mom cleaned out my closet without asking (I still remind her of this occasionally). I played the living heck out of the Droid Factory. Never had the Death Star Playset, remote controlled Sandcrawler, or Troop Transport, though.

A look back at the Doctor Who USA Tour
In the late eighties and early 1990s, there were plenty of small conventions throughout America, and lots of opportunities to meet the star of my favorite shows. As cool as the conventions were, they featured mainly Star Trek actors and…

VIDEO: 1984 Documentary about The Prisoner, Six Into One
One of the things I love about the Internet is it allows us to recover information that would otherwise be lost to us forever. Here’s one example: a 1984 documentary on my favorite TV show The Prisoner. It’s been chunked into segments on youtube, and it’s a great look at the series from a very distinct, dramatic viewpoint with interviews galore. Here’s it is:

Aside
Atlanta, GA January 9, 2012 – The number one TV shows? The Walking Dead and The Big Bang Theory. The biggest movies at the box office? Based on comic books. The biggest companies? Tech giants such as Apple and Google. Geek, once the subject of ridicule, is now chic.
The geeks have inherited the Earth.
In response to this, author Joseph Dickerson has written a book: “i, Geek: Confessions of a Geeky Mind”. The book, with essays about all things geeky, runs the gamut: From James Bond to Doctor Who, from comic book movies to role playing games.
“The success of shows like The Big Bang Theory lets people like me let their “geek flag fly,” and we can walk down the street without getting ridiculed, or random wedgies,” Joseph Dickerson says.
Dickerson, the editor-in-chief of This Week in #Geek, has also written books on design and technology (Experience Matters, UX101: A Primer on User Experience Design) and contributes to TrekMovie.com .
“The book, like me, is a little random. It is a reflection of me, and my geeky interests, so readers may find topics that you aren’t the least bit interested. That’s fine – they can just skip ahead to the next chapter or section. I’m pretty sure my “fellow travelers” will find something that interests them.”
“i, Geek: Confessions of a Geeky Mind” is now available through Amazon in print and for the Kindle and will soon be released on Apple’s iBookstore. Race to the bottom: how entertainment is becoming a (very cheap) commodity
Entertainment companies and movie studios are known for “creative bookkeeping” which allows them to claim that incredibly successful TV and movie properties never turn a profit. This rather unfair practice denies royalties to many of the creative people who worked on said…

Tech Review: Dell Venue 8 Pro is the iPad mini, but better
I love living in the future. I have a LOT of technology in my house, more than my family (of five) need. In fact, I just counted: I have more desktops, laptops and tablets than I have fingers… And I…

Starcrash is cheesy sci-fi that is far from intellectual stimulation
Marjoe Gortner! Caroline Munro! David Hasselhoff! It’s a cavalcade of stars! OK, so it’s not an academy award-winning cast… or even close. These… exceptional performers are the featured players in Starcrash, a 1978 sci-fi film produced in Italy. Clearly intended…
