Ain’t it Cool News has some early spy reports regarding Disney’s 2011 slate of films, and, in addition to sequels to Cars, National Treasure and Pirates of the Caribbean, one other film mentioned is Tron 2. Really? Tron 2?
I think these rumors are all true EXCEPT Tron. If they do pursue a sequel I’d wager it will be after the original Tron will have a “special edition” with some new effects released in IMAX and DVD. Then we’ll have a straight-to-video Tron 2.Tron just doesn’t have the merchandising potential/recent history that Cars and Pirates does, and as other have posted that’s what Disney is looking for (gotta have fresh “product” in theatres to sell the tie-ins, don’t ya know).
This is the same reason I guarantee that we will see Spider-Man 4 in the next couple of years even if NONE of the original cast or crew is involved. It’s Sony’s new “Bond” franchise, only with the opportunity to sell lots more toys (kind of hard to sell “James Bond Blasters!” to kids when Sony has reset Bond back to a cruel killer spy).
