I watch TV, though not as much as I used to. Here’s my TV-related posts.

How will Mad Men end?

I’m an obsessive Mad Man fan. I’ve been there from the beginning and very quickly fell in love with the world and the characters Matthew Weiner (and company) has so brilliantly brought to life. In less than a month, we…

Video: 1977 interview with Patrick McGoohan, “The Prisoner Puzzle”

This is a 35 minute conversation with Patrick McGoohan, talking about The Prisoner for Canadian television on the tenth anniversary of the program. He gets a bit fired up in response to a couple of questions, and his explanation of who Number One was (and the reaction of the audience) is quite amusing. If you are a fan of the show, it’s worth a watch.

VIDEO: The Star Trek Smithsonian Exhibit from 1992

In 1992 the Air and Space Museum in Washington DC featured a massive exhibit celebrating Star Trek – it showcased props, costumes and models from the show. I was able to travel to DC to check out the exhibit that year and was totally knocked out by it (though I still don’t like the details/hull lines they painted onto the big Enterprise model).

Through the magic of the Internet, I was able to find video someone took of the exhibit that they uploaded to YouTube. Here’s all 8 parts, set up in a playlist:

In praise of Ernie Anderson

I’ve always been a fan of voice-over people. And I’m not talking about voice over actors… I’m talking about the people who do voice-over narration for TV show promotions and commercials (though some, like Maurice LaMarche, does both). The most…

VIDEO: 1984 Documentary about The Prisoner, Six Into One

One of the things I love about the Internet is it allows us to recover information that would otherwise be lost to us forever. Here’s one example: a 1984 documentary on my favorite TV show The Prisoner. It’s been chunked into segments on youtube, and it’s a great look at the series from a very distinct, dramatic viewpoint with interviews galore. Here’s it is:

Aside

Good question. I would say it’s because when you are trying to sell a car you are selling a fixed thing, and the focus of the conversation tends to be promoting that thing. Don’s style is in selling a dream, a vision of what people want to have or be. He deals in emotions, not facts. Selling a car in a one-and-one situation is about promoting specifications. Selling a car to a mass audience is about selling that emotion.

Also, Don is self-centered, and probably didn’t spend the time talking to the customer to reframe his sales pitch to align to their needs. See question on Quora
