Was Orson Welles proud of Citizen Kane?

Yes, but he didn’t like to talk about it much. He thought the film had been over analyzed, and also wanted to be recognized for his other films as well. Ask him about Touch of Evil, or Mr. Arkadin, or Chimes at Midnight, and he would talk your ears off. With Kane, he would be slightly dismissive at times.

What he was most “proud” of was the fact that it was the only film that he had final cut – something he rarely had on any other project. Kane, good or bad, was his vision realized with no interference or changes.

He was also proud of the fight with Hearst around the film, and when the subject of Kane came up he often brought that up. He may have been proud of that more than the film, but who knows? He’s no longer with us to ask, unfortunately.
