My sons have excitedly started to use the newest edition of the Dungeons and Dragons rules system, and I can’t help but look at all the great online resources and tools they have and respond sounding like Grandpa Simpson: “In my day all we had three hardcover books, six dice, and Dragon magazine! And we did OK!”
Another thing we had was Gary Gygax. Gygax, who unfortunately is no longer with us, created D&D and also wrote a lot about role playing games. He compiled his thoughts into a book, Role Playing Mastery.
While it has been out of print for a while it is worth seeking out, if just for the advice Gygax has on how to make gaming sessions more engaging and exciting for players. This blog covers a huge chunk of the content from the book over three posts, and is worth checking out if you are curious.
Now if you will excuse me, I have to go make this saving throw…
