Why did David Lynch disown Dune?

Joseph Dickerson, I'm a fan of the work of David Lynch.

He handed in a three-hour cut. The studio wanted a two-hour cut. They took it away from him and reedited it. That was bad enough. Then they released an extended edition to TV and home video that was, again, not cut to his ideas around the film.

So he washed his hands of it, and since David Lynch does not revisit his work (I'd love to see his original extended Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me cut) we will probably never see his original cut.

The comforting thing about all this? Author Frank Herbert had a chance to see the original cut, and he liked it.
