What are the main differences in between magazine and newspaper layout designs?

Keep in mind that most newspapers are still using the column layouts (4 to 6 columns) that have been used for decades. Magazines have a lot more “freedom” to break from that layout model – though many newspapers “play” with the column layout quite a bit. Also with the decline in newspapers the paper size has been reduced quite a bit – many newspapers are now the same size as large format magazines (though internationally newspapers have not been affected as much).
