Great Scott! Fire claims Hill Valley! The Universal Studios fire spares the Clocktower!

My heart sank this morning when I turned on the TV and watched footage of the horrible fire at Universal Studio’s backlot in California. Not only were practical sets and exteriors from decades of TV and movie production gong up in smoke, but the first thing I saw was the clocktower (exterior from one of my favorite films Back to the Future) aflame.

There was a fire on the backlot in 89, I recall, and at the time I read the clocktower was one of the few buildings that survived. Not any longer, I’m afraid.

UPDATE: The clocktower was damaged but NOT destroyed, though the surrounding Courthouse Square is gone! Here’s a link to a story about the sets that were destroyed…
