I don’t have an iPhone…

June 30th, 2007 Joseph Comments

…cause I can’t afford one right now. Well, honestly, I COULD, if push came to shove (I have GREAT credit), but I also enjoy making love to my wife, and, seeing as we are beginning a fiscally-responsible phase of our lives, I decided that purchasing and iPhone would not be in my best interest right now.

When it comes to sex.

Which I like.

Quite a bit.

At any rate, James Lileks, bless his soul, has one, and so I will live vicariously through his acquisition for a while. At least until I can convince my boss at work we need to get one.

For research. And user testing.

Yeah, that’s it.

Microsoft Surface – a big-ass table

June 29th, 2007 Joseph Comments

OK, I’m late to this but I have to post this parody of the Microsoft Surface promotional video. The satirists basically took the original video and changed the VO narration. It’s quite funny.

I mentioned this in my last Star Wars Weekends posting and I finally found some video of the Hyperspace Hoopla that ends each day. Here you are:

Quick take on The Transformers…

June 29th, 2007 Joseph Comments

Just got home from a sneak peak (yes, I got to see it five days early – insert Nelson’s HA HA here) of The Transformers. I’ll have more to write later but here’s a quick, flash response:

It’s the most awesome piece of awesomeness, ever. And if this movie cost half as much to make as Spider-man 3 and Pirates of The Caribbean did, then the respective producers of those movies need to do an internal investigation as to where the money went.

Paramount is gonna make a mint.

Thoughts on the forthcoming Doctor Who Series finale…

June 24th, 2007 Joseph Comments

OK, don’t read this if you have not seen the next-to-last episode of the Third Doctor Who series, The Sound of Drums, cause there be spoilers here.

Seriously.

OK, so the Master is back, he’s hypnotised the world in order to elect him Prime Minister,  and an evil race of metal spheres is coming down from a rip in Space/time created by The Master’s paradox machine (cannabilzed from the Tardis). Who are these aliens?

To me, it’s pretty obvious.

They are the Time Lords.

The Time Lords made a bargain with the Master – we will give you your regenerations back IF you save us if the Time War goes wrong. The Master was lying to The Doctor when they were on the phone (“All of them? Gone?”) and tipped his hand when he told The Doctor “I’d tell you, but it would it break your hearts.” The only way to ressurrect the Gallifreyans is to give them a host body, and to survive they had to construct metal machines to house their essence, becoming the enemy they fought. Brilliant.

The producers are going back to that benevolent-slightly-dark approach some seasons of the original series has with the Gallifreyans, and unless they push a great big RESET button at the end of the finale you will have the resurrection of the Time Lords as the “cliffhanger” and an earth in ruins – OR they hit the reset but the Time Lords are still revived, using the bodies of the humans they “take”.

What a great twist – The Doctor was responsible for the destruction of Gallifrey, and The Master revives the race. Now, the only question is how many Doctors will appear alongside Tennant in the Christmas Special… I am almost 100% certain Paul McGann will be there at this point, due to the foreshadowing from earlier this year (the notebook pic from “Human Nature”). Who else? McCoy? Davison? They both still look up to the part…

Star Wars Weekends, Part 3 – Revenge of the Heat!

June 19th, 2007 Joseph Comments

OK, that was a long time between Part 2 and now.  I blame James Lileks – he has been blogging so heavily he has caused an imbalance in the blogosphere that has sapped my ability to complete any posting I start.

Also, I’ve been burning a lot of mental energy trying to figure out the last episode of the Sopranos. I think that when Tony looked up and after the shock-cut to black Steve Perry came in the diner and demanded a royalty check. Tony and he disagreed, and Perry got whacked as Tony hummed “Open Arms.”

But that’s just my take on it.

Ah, yes, the trip report. Well, after the talk show with the Star Wars celebs (who I would hope are well-compensated for dealing with both rabid fans and the Summer heat simultaneously) we attended the Stars and Cars parade, which had a couple of Star Wars-themed elements – “Luke” and “Leia” ride in a Sandspeeder-type car, followed by Darth Vader, on foot. Why Vader has to walk, I don’t know – “can’t a Dark Lord of the Sith get any respect around here?” Then again, the one scene in the movies where we see him sitting down, he looks kind of goofy – His legs were folded “Indian-style, ” I recall. Not very menacing, but it is the perfect position if you are sitting down to eat S’mores near the campfire.

The mix of Disney characters was old and new – Mary Poppins preceded Buzz Lightyear – and I was surprised to see so many kids recognized the Dick Van Dyke character at Mary’s side. The wonders of home video. BTW, apparently the cast members who play Dick Van Dyke are given explicit directions – Mug with your chin, bend your knees and kick the air, and avoid any ottomans.

By this point the rest of the family had melted into a pile of protomatter that barely resembled a cohesive whole (did I mention it was hot? Yeah I know, Florida hot in June what a shock). We ran into Star Tours, sitting in the back row (which is the best place – all the g forces are centered there). It was our youngest son Mike’s first real “thrill ride” – Dumbo doesn’t count – and we were happy. Finally, our son had been introduced to the brave new world of motion sickness!

Fighting our way out of the Star Tours gift shop/exit (it was moments like this that made me sad that lightsabers weren’t real) we tried to see the Indiana Jones stunt show but, for the first time EVER, they ran out of seats (OK, maybe not the first time ever, but the first time we’ve seen it over numerous Disney trips). We ate a late lunch and then went back to our hotel.

The family stayed and I went back to watch the Hyperspace Hoopla (I’ll write about that more later) and the Fantasmic laser show.

A fun trip was had by all, though the crowds were MUCH larger than last years and, due to ongoing construction for a new Toy Story ride, the facilities dedicated to Star Wars activities were significantly reduced. As reflected in my earlier postings, this made movement sometimes – well, impossible. So, if you are planning to go to any of the remaining weekends, be prepared to wait – we certainly did.
